  • Sharpening raises local contrast at edges. It makes a soft photo look sharper; it does not recover detail the lens never recorded.
  • Bright or dark outlines along edges mean the strength is too high - reduce it or raise the threshold.
  • Raise the threshold on noisy images so flat areas are left alone.
  • Denoise first if the photo is both noisy and soft, otherwise you sharpen the noise too.

No. This is a sharpening filter, not blur deconvolution and not a generative model. It boosts contrast at edges that are already there. If the detail is gone from the file, nothing here can put it back - the best results come from photos that were nearly sharp already.
Halos are the bright or dark outlines that appear beside edges when the sharpening amount is too high for the radius you chose. Lower strength, or lower the radius, until they disappear.
It measures local edge strength first and sharpens edges harder than flat areas, so noise in skies and shadows is amplified less than it would be by a plain unsharp mask.
