No, and no page here claims it does. Auto mode maps brightness to tone: highlights go warm, mid-tones go slightly warm, shadows go slightly cool. It has no idea what any object in the photo is. Hint mode is where actual colour comes from, and you choose it.
Because that is essentially what it is - a brightness-driven split-tone. It makes a flat scan look warmer and more photographic, but it will not turn a grey coat blue.
Run auto first, download, re-upload, then paint hints - or just use hint mode, which already keeps the original tonality underneath the colour you paint.
