It builds an edge map on a downscaled copy of the image, then slides a window of the target aspect ratio across it and keeps the position with the highest total edge energy. It is a classical detail-density scorer - there is no face detection and no saliency model, and everything runs on your device.
Not always. A face on a plain background carries less edge energy than a patterned shirt or a detailed backdrop, so check the overlay. Where it matters, add a custom size and crop manually instead.
